There is so much to do in Tavira all the year round but we would like to make a few suggestions to help you choose. The suggestions will change every few days depending upon what is on in the City, so keep having a look to see whats happening during your visit or stay. Well it is still beautiful and sunny so we don´t think there is a need to change anything yet.
The delightful camera obscura is housed in a redundant 1931 concrete water tower. The Torre de Tavira was founded in 2004 by English astronomer Clive Jackson and his wife Gloria. It a prominent position at the top of the town and is right next door to the Igreja de Santa Maria and the town's castle, all are popular tourist attractions.
When inside the darkened room (the former tank) a rotating mirror in the roof projects the view of the town onto a dished table whilst the guide gives a narrated tour. The effect of seeing very distant people, cars, trains and boats moving with such clarity is amazing.
Spring is with us and the sun is still shining. The water is also warming up. This is a great time to get across to one of Tavira´s 5 main beaches . Some of the ferries are running in Tavira and Santa Luzia . The timetables can be found here. You won´t be disappointed. For the braver of you the water temperature will be fine for a swim. If not just wonder along the golden sand, have a coffee or beer or a bite to eat at one of the restaurants or cafés.
Take a trip along one of the wonders of the Algarve, The Ria Formosa National Park. A special time of the year to take one of the guided tours. The bird life is always special at any time of year and there is a huge increase in numbers in spring and autumn with many birds stopping over on their way to their Winter or Summer homes. See our Ria Formosa page for further details of the company's operating from Tavira.
This is a brilliant way to get to know the city. The train runs around the whole of Tavira stopping at various locations. You can get off wherever you want, have a mooch around and pick the train up when it comes bye again. A very peaceful and scenic journey through a beautiful location.
Tavira Câmera promotes exhibitions throughout the year. In these times of austerity how long this will last is an unknown. The main centre for the exhibitions in Tavira itself is the Palácio da Galeria. Take a look and enjoy the pleasant walk up to the Palácio.
An alternative way of seeing this fine historic city is to take a Tuk Tuk City Tour. Check out their website here to see what your options are.
