We love traveling on trains, you always seem to arrive relaxed and having seen a different view of the areas that you passed through.
Algarve trains are no exception and give the visitor a great chance to see other parts of the area than the one they are staying in.
Portugal trains are run by CP (Comboios de Portugal) and there is an extensive network throughout the country.
Tavira is linked to other parts of the Algarve by a linear route that runs all along the southern coast from Lagos to Vila Real Santo Antonio with Faro being the main station if you want to travel to the North. The fares are reasonable and the trains comfortable and reliable
Tavira main station (Estacao de Comboios) is located on the North East of the town centre at the top of Avendida Dr.Mateus Teixeira de Azevedo. Its about a 10 mins walk from the centre square, Praca de Republica. Once you get there you will need to buy your ticket to your destination
The best way to find out more about the Algarve train services is to check out the CP website. Press the EN at the top right of the page to get the English version. The site is quite complicated but after a few tries you will soon find your way round it. It has been recently updated and we find it far more user friendly now.
The new system allows you to input your ‘From’ Station and your ‘To’ station. So if you are starting off at Tavira you put this in the ‘From’ section and if you are going to Lisbon put this in the ‘To’ section. You will be asked to input the dates you are travelling on. For Lisbon there a number of stations. We tend to go to Oriente as it is quite central. You will now get the train times and you will be able to book these tickets online. Remember to have your passport ready and a mobile phone is useful as you can have the tickets sent directly to that.
